Samuel Emery Chamberlain was born in Centre Harbour, New Hampshire, on November 27, 1829. He fought with the First United States Dragoons in Mexico in 1846-48. During the Civil War he joined the First Massachusetts Cavalry and rose to brevet brigadier general. In 1865 Chamberlain was appointed assistant quartermaster general of the State of Massachusetts, and placed in charge of the state arsenal. He died November 10, 1908. Herbert P. Gambrell (class of 1921 and 1923) worked as a history professor at SMU from 1923 until 1964. Gambrell was an authority on Texas history and worked at the Southwest Review. His published works include biographies of two presidents of the Republic of Texas and several other books and articles on the history of the state.
